Hi everybody - I have two year old gas in my P30 and need to take care of the problem. Here are my questions: 1. Has anybody ever taken out the pickup tube from their P30 fuel tank without pulling the whole tank? And was there a screen at the bottom of it? 2. What is the on direction for the manual shutoff valve - is it in-line with the fuel hose or across it? Thanks in advance - I have a new Moyer engine and have not been able to get much enjoyment due to my bad gas problems! Chris

Manual Shut off valve

Daytripper; Re your second question: If the manual fuel shut-off valve has a long flat handle that only turns 1/4 of a turn, it no doubt is a ball valve (a ball with a hole thru it.) All ball valves I have seen (in 33 years of seagoing in ships and boats) are "on" when the long flat handle is aligned with the expected flow of liquid, and "off" when the handle is aligned so it is across the expected flow of liquid. This is true because the hole in the ball is inline with the valve's handle. So, "on" in your case would be with the handle inline with the fuel hose. The above comments assume there is no 90 degree angle involved, which situation might complicate, but would not seem to invalidate the above rule.

Clarification

This is a small fixture mounted in the fuel line - the handle is one piece mounted horizontally on top of the valve. The handle has a long flat end and a pointy short end and can turn 360 degrees. To me, it does not look solid enough to be a ball valve but might be some kind of gate. I will try to post a picture of this over the weekend Thanks! Chris

further clarification

I see that the valve in question is still manufactured by Tempo Part 140010. A diagram on the This Old Boat web site show the long arrow facing the engine so I am going to end this thread here. Thanks again for your help! chris http://www.boatus.com/goodoldboat/tanksalot.htm

Tank pull not required - problem found

When the marina reinstalled the fuel tank ten years ago (after cleaning it) they somehow bent the copper fitting that attached to the top of the fuel tank pick up tube. Every time the engine was running fuel was spilling out onto the top of tank. Presumably this has been happening for years but now, with the new electric fuel pump that has less suction thant the original mechanical pump, the resulting air leak was causing the new electric fuel pump to start to cavitate and then the engine would shut down. I replaced the copper line with A-1 fuel hose and this problem is solved. Thanks! Chris
