PaulJ, A guy in my yacht club lost the mast on his Hunter33 last year, and is in the process of having it replaced. Along the way he is getting a whisker pole mounted to the mast and a Code 0 on a furler in front of his forestay (which is a fractional rig). As he mentioned this he said he had a few questions, which I think you can answer. Some things are,

1. Does the sail stay on the furler all the time or do you hook it on, hoist it up, furler it up and use it for that day and trip and remove when done?
2. Do you do anything special when you use it?
3. Things in general?

I realize there will be differences as he has a fractional and we have mast head, but we are interested. I also remember you posted pictures, but I could not find them only the link below.

In my research, code zero furlers are attached and hoisted before use, and the sail is modifed to have a "furling luff." The furling luff allows the sail to roll up on itself via the furler, and is usually made of a non-twisting special purpose rope. Essentially the sail and furler are a unit that can be stowed together in a sail bag. It also appears the sheets need to be on the outside, like any Asymmetrical Spinnaker, as furling inside with all that cloth is very hard to do reliably.

I realy like the concept, but the cost is prohibitive for me. I went with an Asymm in a sock, and it works well for me at a fraction of the cost.

So it sounds like they are just up for the time you need them. I think what the Hunter33 guy is thinking is that if he races with it, pre-race he can hoist it and have it ready, and then during the race can unfurl it as he needs it with fewer crew.

When sailing in Desolation Sound BC are last year, I used the asym a lot so I just left it up for 10 days or so.

My furling system on the asym is continous furling line.

When the asym is down I store it in a duffle bag with all lines attached and ready to go.
I store the bag in front of mast.

The only problem I had was the new spin crane and I fixed that.

I became better at furling as time went on .....I run electric winch on high speed using the high speed direction on the winch.

paulj -

I have a (stock?) spinnaker crane, on my 310, but it is painfully close to the jib furler. Works OK, but I can see some nice benefits to yours.

Are you atttaching to the bow roller at the bottom?

Paul,
I see this is pre-rocna. How do you like the new anchor? I'm asking Santa for a 15 KG is that overkill?
