As i'm working on my C-22 for a spring launch ,I would like to install a ventilator. I need advice. Passive or solar vent?. Should I install it on the forward hatch ,or on the deck?Any input?

Solar- hands-down no question. Right through the hatch no problem. Cover with blue tape and use the correct size hole saw- even if you have to purchase it.

Get a solar day/nite version. You really do not want to go through the deck. You don't know if you are going to cut through wires. It is much easier to seal the plexiglass hatch than trying to seal the deck.

Passive vs. Solar...

Passive only works when the wind blows over it. Steve's right on--go with a solar vent through a hatch, not the deck. One at each end of the boat works even better--one set to suck, the other to blow...:naughty:

Solar

I have installed two 24/7 solar in the front hatch on two different boats one was over 6 years and was still working good.
I installed a 24/7 in my new H-36 but only lasted two years and just reinstalled a 12 volt fan in the vent which was the solar vent,I grinded the the fan to fit in the vent and works fine wired to my house batteries which are recharged at my slip.
The venting really works well at keeping the boat smelling fresh.

Nick, were those solar vents both from the same company? Six years for one and only two for the other? And no warranty? Was it repairable? Those things are too expensive to get only two years of use.

Nicro

Yes both same model and tried warranty no good, took apart and played around to repair but no good and gave up,did not feel like paying the $160.00
for new replacement, did get it good price when purchased from defender maybe 3 years.
I had a computer fan that I worked on to make fit in the vent and is working good for now with temporary wires to 12 volt plug in for now, will wire maybe to light next to hatch and maybe try solar down the road, would like to have two simliar air in and out.

Did you contact Marinco? They gave me a very good deal when I had a problem with one of their original day/nite vents. The original ones did NOT have replaceable batteries.

I would call their customer service department and see what they have to say before I gave up.

Don't get a Nicro solar vent. Get one that you can reverse with a switch, negating the need to keep track of two fan blades, and that can be closed from below without having to remove the whole unit. And did I mention, don't get a Nicro?

Hey guys, why would you cut a hole in a hatch if you could mount on top of a dorade box? Seems like a natural, don't have to worry about sealants and leaks. What am I missing?

And what brand if not Nicro? What about something like this?: http://www.solarhome.org/solarventilationfan.aspx .
Or with battery?: http://northstaranchors.com/catalog/sunvent-8-5-stainless-steel-solar-vent-with-battery.html .

Whoops, shoulda' checked our SBO store. Who makes these and is there a warranty Phil? http://shop.hunterowners.com/category.htm?cat=2017

You didn't mention the Nicro that can be closed from below and has an on-off switch? I don't see Marincos in West or Defender- maybe since Nicro is a Marinco comany:doh: I forgot to mention- get a Nicro.
