Passage 42 rigging

Hello everyone

My passage 42 had a new Seldon mast/boom & rigging put on in 2013 by Atlantic Spars of Brixam in the UK. I sailed the vessel and then asked them as arranged to come and check everything out, they had gone into liquidation!! The worry I have is that from the deck to the first set of spreaders on both port/starboard side the rigging crosses over to form an X and, the same between the upper and lower spreaders. In the center of the X they are touching, rubbing and I worry about the ware on the wire. Is this normal with a B&R rigging?

Regards to you all, Bill

PS. If you do not understand my question I could post a picture of the rigging

Scally,

I see that nobody has responded in a day, which is unusual. Private message dave condon. I don't know him personally, but he is very knowledgable as I have read many of his posts.

Although I sold a couple of the 42's, I am well versed with the trailerables. However, you are correct that the wires should not be touching as they will wear and break eventually. It could be the placement of the wires on the wrong side, not enough prebend or combination thereof. If all else fails, then use shroud covers for the time being just to prevent wear.

Keep me posted and my direct email is davecondon@mindspring.com

Hi, I had my new standing & running rigging and life lines replaced last year, my rigging does just touch were they cross on one side, but is just clear on the other. When it was first replaced I had to get it loosened of a little as you couldn't open the door down stairs. I recently had my rigging looked at while I was getting some work done on my furler and he said the tension was what they would set it up for a cruising yacht.

Thank you for that information. Since beginning this thread Seldon have been in touch with me and have put me onto mastandrigging@kipmarina.fsnet.co.uk whom I am awaiting a reply as they are Scottish Seldon specialists. I notice on my new rig that there is a little star crazing in the gel around the deck chain plate on the port side (Dam it!!). Perhaps my rigging is to tight? Incidentally. Since sailing her up from the south of England to St Andrews/Scotland, I have just returned from a 6 week cruise to Holland. What a fantastic and comfortable sailing yacht. Regards to everyone, Bill (Scallywagger)

P 42 rigging "rub"

I have always had that rub on at least one of the cross-over "X" spots you describe. My P42 is a 1991 model, and I have completely replaced the rigging three times. It's the same each time, and I have never noticed any increased wear in that rub-spot.

My last rigger showed me at trick on dealing with the rub. Push the two wires apart with one hand (using your thumb on one wire and index finger on the other). With your other hand wrap the rubbing spot on one of the wires with thick rubber rigging tape. Wrap it all the way around the single wire several times. Then repeat the wrapping on the other wire. Now release the two wires from your other hand and they will again come into contact. Now wrap the "x" with the rigging tape, as if you were trying to hold it all together. That rigging tape lasts me up to a whole season, and it prevents any actual rub from metal to metal.

Cheers,
Paul

Hello Paul

I hope that Seldon will give me a follow up service here in Scotland, should they not; I will do exactly as you have suggested. Good but not good that I am not alone in the apparent problem but, I do hope the rigger should he come, might come up with a lasting solution.

Thank you, best regards; Bill S
