Hi all,
I know we've been through the paces in the past on davits for the Passage 42. Do any of you have any photos of an installation for either the Ocean Marine heavy duty davits or the Kato Marine Island davits installed on a Passage 42 (center cockpit)?
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks, Sail SFbay. For some reason I cannot get the photo from post #4 on that thread. I tried earlier as well, but it wouldn't come up. It must be my computer (if you're able to get it).

I posted that thread so you might contact post #4 or maybe Ocean Marine had a photo of his or other P-42's. Both Kato and Ocean Marine will work with you to either find a photo AND certainly tell you how best to install and support it.

My Hunter 46 has a similar stern design so I know these davits are installed and supported (previously installed davits myself on my Hunter 386) but I was planning on installing an Atlantic Towers dinghy davits to get the dinghy up high and out if the way for disemarking and boarding from the stern.

I thought I'd put some closure on this (since I'm the one who started it). I contacted both Kato and Ocean Marine, and they both had a number of photos of their davit installations on past Passage 42s. It appears that their davit construction and pricing is similar, so I focused on mounting design and load distribution. (I'm always anxious about attachment points when I use the hull or deck for supports like this). I think the main difference between the manufacturers appears to be that Kato davits utilize attachment points that are all located on the horizontal deck surface (for their Passage 42 mounting system), while Ocean Marine utilizes main attachment points that are on the vertical part of the hull by the aft-facing lower scuttles on the stern. That puts the load on a compression point rather than one that pulls upward off of the horizontal attachment. While I suspect that either design provides more than enough support for my purposes, (all other things being equal) I prefer to put the least amount of stress possible on the attachment points. I'm looking at something like a 10 foot aluminum hulled hypalon tube dingy (like the Highfield CL310).

Both outfits have good customer service, and both provided me with rapid and helpful information on everything from design and installation to pricing and shipping. Very user friendly.

I went with Ocean Marine last year. The owner is a very chatty dude, but incredibly knowledgeable. We have had zero complaints, the dingy once in the arms is welded. There is no movement in rolling seas. We worked with a well regarded local yard for the installation and had it done in around 5-6 hours.

Thanks VanIslandGuy. What kind of dinghy and motor do you have?

Thanks for the info. my current dingy is an AVON 3.4 wood floor w/a 15 hp Mercury 2 stroke. I am looking at buying the same Highfield that you have. Good to hear that it's a snug fit in your davits!

Paul, my boat had the kato davits when i bought it , but they cracked the rear deck quite badly- that rear deck is really quite thin. They had used large 2" SS washes on the underside ( in the ceiling of the master cabin) but there were still bad cracks in rear deck- bad enough that i removed the davits immediately_i use the system that Terry Cox developed - i.e. loading my dink on its side on rear step- he has a post in owner mods with good picks. I have the highfield 3m with a 9.8hp. I actually keep my dink on my fore deck unless i am passaging or racing

Eian, thanks for that info. Passaging is always the issue for me with a dingy that I can't pack up and stow below. What do you do with your dingy when passaging?

Thanks, Eian.
I have a very good solution
On my 49, I was looking for some best stylish, and strong Davits.all of the tube davits were very wobbly, and looked like cheap add-ons.
You can actually sit in my dinghy when it’s hoisted, c/w having the engine mounted.
So, it’s not an inexpensive solution, but it will work perfectly. And with a center cockpit boat, it will integrate well with the aft cockpit
