I have a 1986 H40 The steering system is in need of repair. The braking system is broken. The bracket that holds the shift cable will not stay tight. Dose any one know were to get parts for this system. #2 I have a diesel fuel smell in the boat that i can not find. #3 Did this boat come with a blower in the engin compartment.

Joe: I believe that you can get a new brake here on the HOW site. Look at my post on the Photo Forum (throttle creep). There is a clamp that you put on the cable to add tension. There is also a set screw on some of the Y/S units under the compass that allows you to add some tension. If you don't really want to fix it you can use a bungee cord or a tennis ball. The best way to check for a diesel leak is to clean your engine and make it spotless. Then run it and see if you can spot it. Chances are you have a leak at one of the banjo fittings, at the Yanmar fuel filter or one of the nylon washers under the bleed screws (all common places). After that I would start checking and replacing hoses. Blower? Most of the diesels that I see do NOT have a blower in the engine compartment. If yours does not have one, it probably never did. The use blowers on gas engines because of the fumes accumulating in the bilge can/will explode if you get a spark from the engine. Diesel fuel is not nearly as flamable.

What does Y/S mean?
I don't know if the Y/S in your post is a steering equip manufactrer (like Edson) or something else. Please inform. I recently replaced my throttle and trans cables on my 81' H30. The steering gear is Edson, and I called them and had them sent me a catalog. It had every steering gear part I could ever need. Steve Dion (previous reply) helped me with the throttle creep problem, and I installed the J brake on Saturday. If you have an Edson steering system, please checkout their website at www.edsonmarine.com .

What I did...
I have a 1985 H40 with a Yacht Specialties Pedestal. The plastic part that holds the throttle and shift handles (just above the wheel brake)was cracked and glued by the former owner. I tried to find parts for the pedestal for a while but Y/S is out of business, and no one I found had left over parts. There fore I had the part made by a local aluminum foundery and machine shop. They made a sand mold from the plastic part. It cost a couple of hundred bucks but it was cheaper than a new pedestal. My marina had a relationship with the foundery to help people get old parts made. Check with your local folks. As for the diesel smell I don't have any unless I leave the back compartment door open for a while. Than I have a little in the aft cabin only. Also, like your boat I do not have a blower in the rear compartment with the fuel tank. My best guesses. Do you have any diesel leaks? Is there any diesel fuel in the engine bildge? Joe, I found that my diesel fuel tank had a very small leak in it, so fine that I never really located it, but replaced the tank with a plastic one. The way I detected the leak was there was a plywood base that the tank was sitting on, it was soaked with fuel, but it did not run into the bilge, it just soaked the plywood underneath it. That would be enough to cause the odor. Also, its possible that your filters could be leaking from not being put back tite enough after being serviced. You should not, ever, have fuel odors in your boat. Diesel is not like gas, it will not explode, but sure does mess up the smell of dinner! Happy hunting...
