Can anyone experienced with refitting/rebuilding older Hunters, suggest a site or company with a comprehensive list of parts, i.e. windows, hatches, cushions etc. Any help is greatly appreciated, Mark Crociati mcrociati@aol.com

Unlikely you'll find a single source for everythin

'Cuz everything on a boat except the hull is supplied by various equipment mfrs. Many of the ones who supplied them to boatbuilders 14-25 years ago are either out of business by now or were bought by other companies, so even a list of the brand names may be useless. You MIGHT still be able to get wiring and plumbing diagrams from Hunter. Canvas and cushions can be made locally. The rest--bilge pumps, water pumps, toilets, holding tanks, electronics, hatches, sails, rigging etc--you'll have to research and choose the ones you need for that boat. Restoring an old boat is a lot like restoring an old house. Unless it's to be a museum, you don't want to re-create the original, but update everything in it to current state of the art and standards (especially standards). If you do it right, you're about to embark a learning curve that will teach you far more than 99% of the owners of newer boats will ever begin to know about their boats.

Hunter 25 retro parts

I would very much like to be able to make and offer replacement fibreglass hatches for this and the 27. I think I can make them very cheaply. First I need a decent original hatch from which to make a mould. My boat came with a very poorly-made teak hatch which I am replacing with one of mahogany and white Plexiglas. I'll have pics of this as soon as I get it installed. I'm also cutting back the spray hood so the mast does not stand on it (thus making it removable for maintenance). I'll have pics of this in a few weeks too. Another hard-to-find part is the hand-pump faucet for the sink, which I have not located on any market (including eBay) yet. If I find a decent NOS source for this I will post it here. I have bought new smoked Plexi for the cabin windows and am having a machinist friend make up new stainless-steel trim rings for these (using the terrifically oxidised alumninium ones as patterns). I'm also currently riddling out how to pass halyards through the coaming arch to tail them beside the companionway. The mast step is getting redesigned to handle double halyards for jib and main as well as vang and downhaul. The machinist is doing this job too, as well as making up new double-sheave cheek blocks to conduct the halyards aft inside the handrails. I replaced all the old seacocks and through-hulls with Forespar Marelon ones-- including the two aft scuppers in the cockpit well. One of the biggest problems I've ever seen is adapting the Rule-only 1-1/8" hose to 1"-hose through-hulls. I'd love to hear what the Rule people were thinking when they dreamed up that one! I'm making up my own cushions (the boat did not come with them and I'm not sure I needed to have them from the PO anyway!). This is an easy job if you have any access to an upholsterer. Use an electric steak knife to cut the foam to shape and send it out (or do it yourself; it's not that difficult). I caution against using foam that's TOO THICK-- it actually becomes more uncomfortable (and too high) to sit on. Go with 4" stock. Insist on Scotch-Guard for everything. My whole family shops at the Schumacher/Waverley fabric outlet in Newark DE-- you can get very nice stuff there for under $9/yard, good-looking and tough enough for long wear. I'm currently searching for a matched pair of chrome Lewmar 8's for jib winches-- if anyone's got them let me know! JC

Thanks,

Thank you for your imput, in the automotive world there is Hemmings catalog, and within this catalog you can also find remanufacturers that remake original parts from manufacturer's specs, why not boats! Best regards, Mark

Agreed

I already know 80% more than I knew two weeks ago! I built a 16' catamaran with my father and brother many years ago, (c-Glen-L designs under customer photos and "La Chatte") but this is a completely different boat. thank you, M.C.
