On the distribution panel in our catalina 42 the light next to the 30 amp switch does not illuminate. We think the light is simply burned out. We are wondering if anyone knows what type of an indicator light it is and how to obtain it. It is hard wired (soldered in) and connected to the 115 V side, so it is probably not a diode. Can anyone help? Where can I find the web page for the manufacturer of Catalina? George

Duh?????!!!!!!!!??????? www.catalina.com George, you've got larger problems than your light. You need to get a grip on boat systems. Yes, there will be a lot of people who will villify me for this, but you BOUGHT A BIG BOAT, and you are asking a question about a BLOODY LIGHT? Dang it, go find a boatyard owner who is willing to help you find your way out of a car crash dummy shop. I wish you all the best, but wow, what a start! I recommend you read some BOOKS, the things where you turn the pages and spend some time LEARNING.

C42 Indicator Light

George It sounds to me like the light you are referring to is the reverse polarity light, especially since it is on the 115 volt side. Depending on how your boat and panel is wired, it MAY only light if you are connected to shorepower. What I mean by this is that when you connect to shorepower, it MAY NOT light unless you have reversed polarity. In this case, having it NOT light is GOOD. (Reversed polarity is when the incoming power from the dock has the hot and neutral wires wired backwards.) Some boats have two sets of lights, one that says polarity is OK, and the other if it is not (once you are plugged in). I do not know what kind of setup you have. Sometimes the lights do burn out. If you want a backup, just go to a hardware store and buy a reverse polariy tester, hook up to shorepower, turn on your breaker and plug the tester into an outlet. They cost around $10, or you can have the light replaced, if, indeed, it is out. It may not be broken at all. I suggest you either find another C42 owner and ask him, or check with someone local who you know who understands electrical systems and ask him (boat size does not matter here), or check with a local dealer. The Catalina 42 Association website may be of some help to you, also. Good luck, Stu

Replacement Light

George, Replacement lights are available at, of all places, Radio Shack. The P/N for the green light is 272-708, and the P/N for the red light is 272-712. You are correct in that these lights are not diodes (LEDs) but are neon and are indeed wired into the shore power circuit. One more thing, the panel manufacturer is Seaward Products. I have added a link to their website. You could probably call them and get replacement lights from them too. Also, check out http://www.catalina42.org. Gee, wasn't that info a little more constructive than Stan's useless rant? Rodney C-42 Sashay
