I'm sailing from Pensacola to Panama City FL for a few days over July 4th week and looking for information on anchorages, restaurants, activities for the kids, or any local knowledge. Any help would be very much appreciated... thanks!

It's a Zoo!!!

Over the 4th PC is a Zoo especially out around Shell Island. The back side of shell island is a great anchorage if you like company. If it is rough out at SI a lot of people anchor off the ICW near Redfish Point. Just go like you are going to the PC marina and it is just across the ICW. There are some ship and barge trafic but if you get behind the point you should be fine. There are a coule of small inlets there but be carefull as you can get stuck. The last time I was there there was a sank boat. Watsons Bayou is a nice anchorage that is a hurricane hole. You can dinghy in and it's not too far to walk downtown. It will be very busy over the 4th. Extreme boat traffic at the jetties coming into Andrew's Bay. It you are sailing outside and want some relative peace and quiet I'd suggest going about 20 miles on down the coast to St Joe. But if you are more of a party animal anchor at Shell Island... There is a shallow area as you go east to get behing shell island and you need to stay near the north shore and then head south towards Spainish Shanty Point. If you go straight up the middle you will probably get stuck. East and West Bays are sailable but have shallow areas. To get to east bay you must go under a 50' bridge!!!! Going west after the pass near the state park is a rough place to anchor..too much boat traffic.

It will be a madhouse

The 4th weekend will be crazy. We went throught the cut the weekend the Tydall airshow was going on and it was crazy to the point of suicidal. The power boaters were rude and dangerous. They saw no problem with two of them passing a sailboat while going under a bridge (us)! One on each side. I guess they thought it was great sport. Our friends in the boat behind us said there are no more cobwebs under the bridge after we swept it clean. Port St Joe is alot less active, but still it will be busy. There are great anchorages in the bay and the PSJ marina is full service and very friendly. If you are in the neighborhood this comming weekend, come out to see the boat parade on Saturday. Around 20 boats (both power and sail) will be participating Saturday evening. We moved the parade from the 4th so we could get more participation. If you want more info, let me know.
