I am hoping someone can lead me in the right direction for the "Painting process?" Also, what epoxy works best on an O'Day hull id we have some dings to fill in before we paint? One last question: Do you use anti-fouling paint on the waterline? Thanks for any and all advise.

Epoxy

Meg, There are two types of resins, Epoxy and Polyester. If your boat is made with epoxy, and I'm pretty sure it is, you would use an epoxy type of resin or filler. Polyester resins will not adhere to an Epoxy hull, but Epoxy resins will adhere to hulls made with either epoxy or Polyester. This is a good thing to always remember and I'm pretty sure that the O'Days were all made with epoxy. Here's a link that will answer any questions that you may have. Also, Don Casey has a very good book entitled "Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair" that you can probably find in your public library. "There's nothin' quite like messin' with boats." Good luck! Joe

Odays made with epoxy?

Really? Hadn't heard that, but it'd be cool if true. Good thing I'm going with epoxy and epoxy products for repairs, then

oday epoxy?

You can tell when you grind into old laminate and smell the esters. My O25 is polyester.

I haven't smelled enough of either

I can't tell the difference between the two based on smell. Somebody could ask Rudy the next time they talk to him.

Let me rephrase that

I know for a fact that my O'Day is built with epoxy because I tried to patch a gouge in my bow at least twice with polyester filler and it fell out after a while, each time I did the repair. So one day I mentioned this to Rudy Nickerson and he told me that my boat was built with epoxy and I should use epoxy fillers and resins on it, or it won't stick. It's possible that there are some O'Days out there that were built with Polyester resins. If so, then I humbly stand corrected. All I can tell you is that I used the same brand name filler, that read "epoxy filler" on the box, and the repair has lasted all these years. I can't remember the brand name of the filler that I used but it came in a red and white box, and they finally started manufacturing it with epoxy instead of polyester. You also had a choice of either a white or a gray filler.
