I have been thinking about painting the non skid for better traction and also to break up the color. I really like the Hunter boats with the two tone deck the light gray and the white. Ther are some products on the market for this does anybody have any experance with doing this? Cliff H 28.5

Tredmaster

You might want to consider treamaster, rather than paint. Paint lasts 4 or 5 years, treadmaster is forever. Last month's "Good old Boat" mag has articles on both paint and treadmaster. It's worth a look.

Interlux Brightside

Cliff, I've done it twice with Interlux Brightside. Never used their premixed but have used their nonslip grit and also used their flattener with it. The first boat was done about 6 years ago with the tan and it still is holding up well. The second about four years ago and it too looks good. The non-skid powder works as well as the original pattern non-skid, if not better, and you can put several coats on high wear areas. In all honesty, I would probably use paint on the decks and Treadmaster in the cockpit because of the high wear and abuse from racing.

change boats

Cliff or anyone with experience buying a 28.5. cliff, I read your post with interest a couple of years ago while I was buying a 25.5 that we reconditioned and have loved for a few years. I like a boat that sails well and put lots of work into the rigging, sails, furling etc and made the boat shine inside and out. We now have a buyer for our boat (hard to come by on smaller boats) and the chance to buy an 85 28.8 fin keel. It is a fresh water boat and is sound. new bottom and new custom made cushons (leaks and milldew destroyed the old). Bascially a stock boat but the deck hatches have been replaced. Sails are old and no roller furling. Deck is in good shape but the cabin sides where the stripes were removed have vertical gell gracks from dry layup (factory screwup). the dealer is grinding out the cracks, filling, and shooting new gel. the boat has not been mistreated but shows the grime of not being used for a few years. Hull looks great. The dealer has spent money on bottom, cushons, lines, rebedding all hatches, and lots of little stuff so he wants to recoup his cost. 1985 models book at about 14,000 low and 17,200 average. He wants 22,000 which I think is high. It is the end of the season and he needs to sell. the new bottom and cushons alone are worth 3,000. I might be able to buy for around 20,500. Still seems high but I do have a built in buyer for my 25.5 at a better than average price and on Stockton Lake, MO the small boat market is soft. I know that if I spend a little over 20,000 on the boat I will easily put another 5,000 or more into the boat. Help! am I crazy, I like the boat but am worried about over investing. Jeff

Just did mine...

Hi Cliff, I just repainted my nonskid with Interlux Brightside - didn't use the flattener. I used a commercially-available grit compound mixed in, and it looks great. I can't comment about longevity, but it seems to be holding up well. It was an easy job. I spent one day preparing the surface (sanded with a palm sander and 80 grit - then 120 grit), then painted about noon the next day. I used a small trim roller after a careful masking job, and it took less than an hour per coat. Because of the grit, the finish is very forgiving - in other words, it's not hard to get a good-looking result.

The 28.5 is on my opnion the best boat on the market in the 30 and under size range. We race our's and also cruise and have found the boat to be perfect for this type of sailing. My wife and I do a 2 week vaction on the boat and have been in some real rough Lake Erie slop. 6-8 foot waves with a rouge set of twin tyen footer's. Boat has sailed well in all of this. Ther are a few things about the boat that I am not real fond of but all of it is a trade off for something. Deep keel boat will out point all boats in the same PHRF # area. Boat will just loves to go to weather and does so very well. Price, I have never been a fan of what the book says a boat is worth. I think the book is most of the time wrong not matter what book you look ast they all seem to be a little different. I think it all comes down to each boat as a independent of all the rest. Not all boats even the same make and model are the same. Use my boat for an example, We have a full set of UK Tape Drive racing sail's plus I just ordered a new # 1 for next season. New Asy kite all new deck hardware spinnaker gear new cabin top winches and so on the list can get longer. Now the book might say my boat in exellent condition is worth $18K. That might be true for a boat with 18 year old sail's and no upgrades and one cabin top winch. But were not talking apples and apples. I got something like $7K invested in sail's alone, so No way would I sell it for what book say's just is not going to happen. Over investing!!! Boats are boats you will never get out of it what you have in it. You will not be the least bit sorry for buying the 28.5. I think a nice 28.5 with okay sail's and needing up grades should sell in the $18-$20K range some cheaper with needing more work and some more with needing less. I have a great boat and would not sell it with the new sail coming for less then $25K. email me off site for more input on the boat cliffr@sbcglobal.net Cliff

Have you considered paintable gel coat?

Cliff: Have you considered roll-able, paint-able gel coat. You get it in a white color with the wax mixed in. Then you add the amount of tint to colorize the gelcoat to your liking. Then add the catalyst. This is applied with a special roller. There is also a thickener that is added so the stuff peaks like your existing gel-coat finish on your decks. Remember if you paint the non-skid you need to be careful on what cleaners you use on the decks for ever more.

Different places.

Pete: There are different places, but I think that Jim Willis from Island Girl recommends a place in Santa Cruz. My friend with a Hunter 30 got his from some place on the east coast. I will search thru some old posts and see what I come up with (you may want to do the same).

Consider using this product

Durabak. I am thinking about using it on my boat. I posted an article asking if anyone had any experience with the product but no one is responding so I'll jump on this string and see if anyone has any input. The website is listed below. By the way, they have a light gray color.
