I want to repaint the cabin on my boat. The guy at our local sail shop said we can use regular enamel paint. Has anyone tried this and is he right? Any suggestions? Also what is a good wax for the hull?

I paint my boat once every two seasons using regular gloss white paint. THis time it will be Rustoleum, becuase that is what I have. It last the same, looks the same, goes onthe same as Easypoxy, a one part boat paint. How large is your boat? Mine is 37'. A small boat, 30' or so, would be about most peoples limit for what I do to mine. So if yoiu don't plan on doing it again soon, use two part epoxy paint. Next, how old is your tub? Mine is a 1976. Old. Not worth the money for two part. But I might get lazy two years from now. Whatcha got on it now? If it's gel coat and no paint, use two part, for a ten year lasting paint. If you put on regular paint, it might peel off or orange peel if you try to use tow part later on. SO, size of boat, age of boat, and surface conditions determine type of paint.

FRP paint
I just painted my 1978 H33C entire top decks and cabin top with FRP paint. I think the FRP stands for (Fiberglass Reinforced Paint). It lays and flows really well if you use a retarder to slow down the drying time which is only a few minutes to the touch. It is very durable and cleans fairly easily with mild biodegradeable soap. I rolled it on using a mini roller about the size of your index finger. Gives more control and easier to control over lapping. This paint is very good for the bilge or inside lockers etc. It can also be tinted to whatever color you want. Not sure where you can get it in the states, but I am sure you can find it if you ask around. I painted over previous painted surfaces without knowing what was used before. The FRP was compatable with the old paint. Good luck from Okinawa, Japan.

Use oil based
When we bought the boat last year, the carpet liner in the cabin was ruined by mold. We painted with oil based Kilz (supposed to inhibit mold) after we tore out the liner and prepared the surface. Just opened up the boat this weekend and it still looks good.

cabin paint
It's a 23 ft Aquarius. The gelcoat is still in good shape although we are going to try to clean it up a little more but the cabin is trashed. There's been a small water leak and everything is peeling. The only thing in good shape are the cushions and that's because they weren't stored on the boat. It will probably be more of a winter project doing the cabin but I would at least like to get started with scraping.

FRP
Not Fiber Reinforced Paint paint; Fiber Reinforced Plastic (commonly called "fiberglass") paint. If you're peeling, I'd think you'd want to take it all the way down (sand it all off) No use having the old paint release under your new paint. You can't cover this bad paint; you have to replace it.
