I ahve an old Catalina 27 in fine shape but the rub rails look pretty bad, even after cleaning. Is there any paint, stain or treatment that will give them a teak look? I suppose Cetol wouldn't work or would it? It would be nice to have a teak look, I would think. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think that would look too good.

I think you're better off just replacing the rub rails with........new rub rails.

New Rubrails

I just received new Rubrals for my 89 Cat 30. I ordered them directly from Catalina. I even went with a light grey vs the current beige. The cost was $1.76/ft. and took about two weeks to receive. For about $110.00 why bother trying to clean the originals. In my case there was years of creosote and assorted other items from bumping bulkheads and poles. You can contact Catalina at (818) 884-7700.

Painted rubrails--

For what it's worth, I had the same problem w/my rubrails & decided to do some experimenting before replacement.I Completely sanded the rails w/ 100 grit paper & finished off w/ an alcohol wipe. Afterwards, I brushed on an exterior enamel (in my case, Rustolium brown--three coats, minimum). Let dry for a couple days, then waxed. First time I went to the launch site with it, I was asked where I got the neat wooden rubrail. It was'nt until they got much closer that they realized that it is only paint. I would definitely try to experiment w/various paint and/or colors before tearing it off. Unless the condition of the rail is so deteriorated that it warrents replacement, for a couple of bucks, give it a try. Mine's held up for over three years, now.--- Good luck, and smooth sailing!

Wet sanding with 320 wet and dry can restore.

Many 'rubber'/vinyl rub rails can sometimes be 'restored' by wet sanding with 320 wet & dry sandpaper and a little dishwashing detergent in the water. This will leave a slightly 'roughened' surface that can be 'reskinned' by VERY quickly wiping on/off with a cloth soaked in solvents such as Interlux 2333N.
