Painting my Mast

Yes I know this has been discussed before, and I checked the search tab, but I need more info.
The mast is aluminum and anodized, but it's from 1970. the process then was not as good as today. it's in pretty good shape no dings (not much anyway) but it looks old and grey.
I want to spruce it up a bit.
Any recommendations on paint, and process? I am a do it yourself person. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I Googled "painting anodized aluminum mast" and got several hits. Easier than regurgitating the info. hope this helps.

I did my mast on my Ranger with one part Brightsides polyurethane from Interlux - Steel grey, I think. I used the chromium primer, and if I remember the Interlux paint primer. It was brushed on. I may have put on more than one coat of the Brightsides. I don't remember. All in all I was happy with the result. The finish was more resistant to scratching than I anticipated.
I did take all of the hardware that I could off the mast and spent hours sanding. I filled big dings with thickened epoxy and sanded smooth. I liked that finish way more than the chalky old anodizing. That was my experience.

I repainted my 1988 C30's mast and boom two years ago. The old paint was chalking badly so I sanded it all off to bare aluminum. According to Interlux, the key to painting aluminum is to get it primed within 1 hour of sanding. I use InterProtect 2000e for primer and then top coated with Perfection.

It turned out great and is holding up very well so far.

On the same topic, what about those spots where SS fittings vs Aluminum has caused galvanic corrosion? And the surface is pitted all the way through the anodized coating with a powdery oxidized surface in the recesses.

How does one prepare these areas? Grinding down to bare metal seems too extreme particularly if one isn't too particular about getting "new car" perfection. Just want the new paint to stick and not blister up because a weak bond.

Any acid or special primers for these areas?

Been there done that looked great

I like to keep a clean good looking boat but at least up here with mandatory mast steeping it's impossible to keep the paint in a condition you flip out over

I'm planning to do the same thing later this spring and I also have pitting from galv corrosion. From my research the most recommended treatment is called Alodine. Only trouble is I haven't found a place locally to buy it.

Painting aluminum can be a PITA if you don't do a clean, clean, and clean again approch After you clean it needs to be preped with an etch, cleaned again and then apply alodine to seal it You can buy alodine at Aviall or other aircraft supply places as most paint shops have no idea what the stuff is.

Go to your nearest airport where they service small airplanes. If they don't have it, they can tell you where to get it.
Alodine is a common product in the aviation world.

I was jess gonna talk about this guy named Tim that did it and Voila'! there he was. I've heard that if you support the mast from the ends you can work farther and spin the mast freely as you work. Makes sense. Also, start from the top and get good at it by the time your reach eye level. It will impress the ladies.
