Anybody know what kind of paint is used on the interior wood? I am talking about the white paint that is used on the lids for the bilge, storage areas, rear bulkhead etc. Thanks Ashley

most of this is melamine

Ashley: Most of these wood surfaces are made from Melamine. It can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowe's or any home improvement store or lumber yard.

Amazing

I just finished reading an article about melamine in imported Chinese food products and saw this reply. I don't plan on eating my interior though.. ;D The rear bulkhead looks painted though. You can tell by looking at the backside which isn't painted, but has runs from painting the front. I don't know much about melamine, but I thought it was more like a sheet of plastic that is bonded to the wood like Formica. I am replacing the rear bulkhead and was building it to match the original. I guess I could stain it to match the head walls/door instead of painting it white.

Ask Hunter

I think mine is painted too. I'm not sure what it is, but I know Hunter Marine has been very responsive when ever I have inquired about OEM product applications. You might give them a call or e-mail, and then please share with us their response!

I did and it is

Hunter said it is just standard gelcoat mixed with MEK. I thought it might be gelcoat, it doesn't look like normal paint thus the original question. Now question #2. How easy is it to work with gelcoat? never had to before.

actually Steve is right

I checked my rear bulkhead when I got home. The edges of the openings are painted and the doors are painted, but the front surface is melamine. I didn't bring any bilge covers home, but probably the same. Anyway I think George's suggestion is the way to go, I already have the wood cut, but I might look around for the other stuff for anything else I do.

iron on edge stripping

Ashley: Most of the time they use the iron on stripping to finish off the edges. This stuff is available from the home improvement centers. I do not how well it works once the edges get wet or worn.

Thanks for the tips

I checked out the laminates from Lowes this morning. I will probably try that for the next project
