I have painted smaller boats, 22' and 26' with great success and last year I painted the hull on my 30' . Job on one side was pretty good, the other not so hot. So I researched what went wrong. Here is the conflicting advice: when you "tip" the paint, do you go horizontal ( as I did ) or vertical ( as I recently read ). Anyone with experience with this ?

I've only painted the stern of my boat and I believe I tipped side to side.

Didn't matter, I sanded down with 4000 grit when I was done to bring out the gloss....no way I could face doing that on the whole hull!

Sanding goes quickly when you determine the most aggressive paper that works with the surface, then work your way down with progressively finer grits. Somewhere around 400 grit should level the paint with just a few strokes, then a few strokes with 600, and you're ready for compounding and polishing.
