I have another question concerning painting the deck of my Catalina 22. I am looking at the hardware to take off and a chunk of the hardware uses bolts to attach them to the deck. There are some pieces of hardware, such as the rails in the back and the front that use, or seem to use screws. The boat is from 1974. If the hardware is well and recently bedded, I'd just tape them off. If I wanted to re-bed the hardware anyhow, this is a great time to take them off and re-bed them.

As @Will Gilmore has suggested if your thinking of restoring vs cleaning up the looks, then this is a great time to address the re-bedding of your Deck hardware.

Use and years of exposure to the elements has likely deteriorated the bedding used to seal the holes in the deck. This is a prime source of water that gets inside the barrier created to keep water out and the boat dry.

Your paint is an attempt to improve the looks and reestablish that film of water seal.
Paint will not address the water intrusion under the deck hardware. Only re-bedding will.

Your boat will thank you with many more years of fun for this labor.

If you remove and re-bed the deck hardware after painting the result will be much better. There's something about painted caulking around deck hardware that has a sloppy look to it - that is just my opinion. And, wet cores are associated with deck hardware. It is way more work to remove the deck hardware. Your boat ......
