Painting around hull joint bolts

I've removed all hardware, except the hull-to-deck joint bolts, in
preperation of painting the deck and hull with Interlux Perfection. Is
there an easier way then masking the head of eatch bolt, has anyone
painted over them? Thanks

I am in the process of painting the deck as well, with
Perfection, and spent a a good bit of time masking of the bolt heads.
The first coat of primer weeped up on some of the heads, or the tape
moved, so I then pulled off all the tape and painted over them.
Decided that if I don't like the painted look I will replace each
bolt, one at a time (like that will happen) I did not remove the track
for the head sails but wish I did. One mistake I made was to use a
cheaper brush for the primer and I spent a lot of time sanding out
brush marks. also, looking for a sanding block that will conform to
the deck I found that paint stores sell a sanding sponge. The grit is
too strong but can be wrapped with finer paper and works well. I also
made the mistake of priming when the deck was too warm,( the primer
kicks fast) should have waited for a dry morning instead of starting
in the afternoon and am now waiting for a cooler day for the first
coat of Perfection. The first coat of primer looked like hell but
sanded out well. The second coat is much nicer.

Hi Andy,
I painted the deck using Interlux brightside about a year ago and masked
the hull-to-deck bolts with masking tape. I used a tool for boring
different size corks for scientific use. I used this tool to punch out
as many pieces as I could get out of one roll of the flexible type
masking tape. I don't remember the size I used but you can measure the
bolt head to get an idea. You can find the tool at Fisher Scientific
(https://www1.fishersci.com/Coupon?cid=1341&gid=2375539

set seems to be a waste since you only need one. An auto parts store
might have something similar for punching bolt holes out of engine
gaskets. As always use good tape and get it off before the sticky stuff
is permanent.
Good Luck,
Rob
