I recently aquired a set of Lewmar winches #30. They are showing their age and have considered painting them. They are the typical dark models with no chrome or shinning stuff etc, Has anyone tried to paint a winch or seen ones that have been "refurbished" In this same vein what does the desig 30 or 40 or 65 mean ?? The # 30 designates the highest power ratio that the winch will provide. In the case of the Lewmar 30, its 1st speed provides a power ratio of 7:1 and the 2nd speed provides 30:1. These "dark" models are the highly regarded aluminum winch. This to save weight and turning force. I have a pair of Lewmar Ocean 44STOR aluminum as primaries and a pair of 30AST on cabin top. With just a little maintenance they should last a lifetime.

don't paint
It will just wear off. Leave them as they are, they are aluminum and will be fine as is.
