Here is my experience..... FWIW........
I wish I could recommend a silver bullet for the prop/shaft barnacle problem.I can't.However here is what I have coated the prop & shaft with and the results:Ablative paint: Sort of works until it wears off, unfortunately the wear-off time is much less than my normal season. Maybe if I didn't find the need to motor so much it would last longer....Hard anti-fouling paint: Again, works a little but still wears off, or maybe the biocide just can't leach to the surface fast enough to be effective.Desitin & cayenne pepper mix: Wow, I thought I had a winner the first year. After using it a second year with poor performance, I realized that the reason it worked so well the first year was that I had gone to Maine for a month and also to the Chesapeake for a month with lots of motoring all the time. The old tin-based spray paint: For whatever reason it didn't work for me. It seemed like the barnacles really loved it.Interlux Trilux spray, $30: One can, six coats. Apparently more barnacle food, it didn't work for me at all.Pettit 1792 Zinc Coat Barnacle spray, $15: Applied 2 coats per instructions. Worked better than anything else. Not perfect, had some barnacles on the hub and shaft, but not a heavy coating. I did cruise to Maine for a month, so had a fair amount of motoring. I have just cleaned the prop and applied 2 new coats, same spray can. Ask me in the fall how well it worked this season. In my boatyard, some owners have had a product called Prop Speed applied. It is a two-part process and the material cost is very pricey- about $200+ for the material plus labor to have it applied. I think you can apply it yourself. The results were varied- some boats it seemed to work pretty well, and others were much worse than my $7.50 worth of Pettit Zinc Coat. I understand that it is supposed to last more than one year, but I don't know the details. It really doesn't matter, there is no way I'm going to spend that much money on the prop. It would be cheaper to hire a diver twice a month.....
