Paint stripper and gel coat

I’m in the process of renovating my handrails and want to clean up where the previous owner was ‘less than careful’ with application of wood stain. Ive tried Goof Off and Varisol thinner but not really made much impact . I’m sure paint stripping gel would do the job with a toothbrush ….but wondering if it would harm the gelcoat ? Thanks as always in advance !

Almost definitely. I would remove the handholds and gently sand the offending areas.

Try your worst paint stripper in a hidden high gloss area to check for damage (loss of gloss) to the gel coat. Varisol thinner won't touch the stain. Try lacquer thinner as that's pretty nasty stuff.

If you do sand to remove the stain, you're stuck with cut polishing the area as the sanding will look rough.

Try barkeepers friend or some other cleaner with Oxalic acid
