paint over depth/temp sensor?

I'm repainting the bottom of by Beneteau F235. I can't remember if the thru-hull that performs depth & temp measurements was painted over by the prev owner. I've been fairly careful not to paint over it at this time, but I've had a few 'slips' with the roller. A stupid question: does a little paint (smear) on this unit (Signet brand I think) affect performance/function ?(probably does!) A not-totally-stupid question: what is this thing made of, and what solvent/abrasive can I use to remove all paint (if necessary) without screwing it up altogether? It looks like a block of opaque plastic, with a metalic probe in the middle (about 1/4" in diam) that is flush with the flat outer surface of the unit. Thanks, Neil

Transducer anti-foulant.

Getcha-self a wax toilet gasket,it's soft enough to apply a thin coat to yer transducer.Them lil' buggers will never adhere. Works every time,if I'm wrong---ya-get's-yer-$-back!Mus'taste like----to em'!

I tried and..

the depth sounder portion worked fine, but I couldn't get a temperature reading. I used that black transducer anti-fouling paint through West, on a Seatalk transducer.

Testing Temperature Function (from Airmar): Use a 10,000 Ohm resistor to make contact between the input contacts on the echosounder. This should result in a temperature reading of 70 - 75 Degrees F. (23 - 27 Deg. C). If it does: Transducer problem. If it doesn't: Instrument problem. HTH Gord
