I have taken all the vinyl boot stripe and accent stripes off my Hunter 30 (but not my vessel name which is in vinyl). I am going to be cleaning and finishing the hull with Island Girl products. Has anyone experience on whether paint or tape is better and when in the process should I apply it? Should I apply tape (or paint) after full cleaning with the Pink and before applying the silkenseal or after silkenseal? Any advise is welcomed.

Stephan, Wouldn't paint over silken seal.

My paint orange peeled when I painted over silken seal. I used a dewaxer to get down to real gelcoat, then painted the strips. I prefer paint over tape. If it gets nicked or damaged, you can touch up the paint but not the stripes. I removed my cabin tape and re-did them with paint. I'd like to do the hull too but Im to lazy to strip the stripes off. Have Used Island Girl

We used the Pink and Clear to clean our Oday 322 three years ago when we purchased it. While my husband was in charge of the barrier coat, I applied the Island Girl to the hull. First, the Pink is a great overall cleaner. Follow instructions for cleaning. I cleaned both sides with 1/4 of a bottle. After the hull dried, I used 1/4 bottle of the Clear to take the oxidation off, and the shadow marks from previous paint/vinyl, and any scuffs. The Clear should have come with a fine scotch pad. Use it, not a different one. Then I applied the port name (vinyl) and the identity tag (sticker). We THEN waxed the hull with Island Girl Superwax. We have not painted our boat. The wax has not performed well, but we highly recommend the Pink and Clear for cleaning and oxidation removal. Good Luck!

Stripes and lettering etc

Both stick on vinyl and painted stripes/lettering HAVE to be applied to a chemically clean surface (no wax, silicones), and definitely not if the surface still beads water. Therefore NO Silkenseal or Swax. Although one person has applied to well cured Mirror Hard (that is mostly resin), I think that good clean gelcoat surface is best, ESPECIALLY whenb applying stick on letering where even acetone wiping is required. I agree with the previous post that paint is nicer than stick on and is easier to remove or modify, Previous use of IG cleaners will not interfere with paint adhesion and will not cause "fish eyes" . In fact years ago, I used them to remove old varnish before refinishing my cabin sole. However, because most older gelcoat is porous and will have absorbed some wax/silicone, as a precaution, you should always use always use a "grease and wax remover (auto paint store) or 3M adhesive remover (contgains Xylene/Toluene). When well cured you should be able to use Mirror Hard SUperglaze (new boats, painted boats) to protect the lettering. or Simply Briliant (or any other wax) over an older boat.. Our new versions of both the SB Superwax and MH Superglaze are now much faster setting and come with a catalyst for even faster setting. This eliminates previous slow setting/dirt problems in less than ideal (colder) conditions. Sorry for the delay in replying but still in the SF Bay area after the Sail Expo at Oakland. If you were there, you would have seen our new instructional video. When I get back we are going to post on the internet (only finished day before the show!). Hope this was of some help Jim W
