I'm looking to paint the topside of my hunter 25. Just the typical gloss white. There isn't any non-skid on my boat so it shouldn't be too difficult. My question is: Do I need to buy topside paint from a marine store? At 40-50 bucks a gallon, I'm wondering what the difference is between that and a good latex or enamel from a harware store. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (suggestions or coming by with a roller!) thanks Chris Blue Light Special

No you don't.

Chris: I think that you are going to look at the job done with the exterior enamel and think that it looks just as good as one part or two part polyeurthane paint. I think that the difference is going to be in a couple of years the house enamel is going to start wearing sooner the the one part. The one part is going to start wearing sooner than the two part. Now with all of this said. Preperation is one of the keys to the entire job. The better prepared the surface is the better the final job will look and hold up. PS: What happened to the non-skid? Has the boat been painted before?

no non-skid

Steve, thanks for the advice! the boat is a 1974. I don't see any evidence of non-skid anywhere. Maybe enough people slid around that hunter decided to change their ways!

1974 Hunter

If your 74 Hunter the same as mine with the sloped foredeck (see photo forum) I strongly suggest you bring topside back to original condition and replace non skid areas. The owner reviews say it all. The foredeck takes some getting used too due to shape. To go forward on deck in bad weather with no non skid surface is really foolish. I would be happy to forward pix of areas that are non skid if you have the same model. If you don't replace non skid areas don't solo and wear safety harness. P.S. Also make sure you Insurance premiums are paid.

Cherubinis had painted on non-skid.

Chris: The Cherubinis had painted on non-skid. Some type of rubberized material that actually lasted quite a long time. My friends '81 H'30 is showing wear but in general the non-skid has held up very well. He uses his boat all the time too. What I suggest you do is find one in your area and see where they have non-skid. Really can't imagine not having it on a boat. Even the non-skid is not that great.

disagree with Steve

I believe you will find that the Cherubinis had a gelcoat non-skid, with a stippled surface that was rolled on. It can be quite easily re-done the same way, with a coarse roller. Practice a bit to get the feel of it. Sounds like you don't even have to do much sanding!

I stand corrected.

Tim: I stand corrected (thanks). The non-skid on the Cherubinis was a "brushable/rollable kind of gelcoat") This is directly from Greg Emerson at Hunter. Now has anyone redone their boat with this type of product and what product did you use?
