I'm finally getting some paint on the boat. Primer right now, but it's starting to look good. I've been fighting myself on getting the boat perfect thinking that I've got to have it in bristol condition. After seeing my first 2 coats of primer go on, I've gotten over that. The first coat looked awful. I rolled and tipped it without thinning at all. After sanding and painting another coat of white primer with a little bit of thinner, it actually looked really good. I applied this with a roller and didn't tip it at all. If I were painting my boat white, I wouldn't hesitate doing the whole boat this way at all. There was a slight orange peel to the finish, but not noticeable more than 5 feet away, just looked like slightly aged gelcoat. This weekend I also applied my first coat of colored primer to half of the topsides. Half primer and half color (Brightsides Dark Blue). It came out to be the exact same color as blue masking tape. My wife came out and saw it and tried to be nice about how good it looked until I told her this wasn't the final color. She came clean and said that's good because she hated the color. Again, this was simply rolled on with no tipping and came out looking really good from 5 feet. A few runs here and there, but really, the finish is something I could live with. I do have to be a little more careful with the dark blue since it will be shinier and the dark color will transmit the flaws. I am really happy with how my repairs to the topsides have all but disappeared under the paint. I'll try to snap some pictures tonight of the progress if the weather permits.

Don't be afraid to over thin the paint-

it'll go on easier, and lay much flatter. You'll have much less work to make it look good. The more coats the better, for looks and for durability. As you've found out, prepping the boat is hard work, so make the painting look as good as possible, cuz you don't want to go through it again!

You're right about everything showing on the dark paint. White hides everything, dark hides nothing. Make sure the primer/paint mixture you applied is perfect- every flaw will show through like you can't believe! If it's not right, now's the time to sand it. Once all the paints on, it'll be there, and no amount of buffing is gonna hide what's under the paint.

I had a couple of spots where my sweat got on the paint without me seeing, and I wound up with 3 large fisheyes. Granted, I know where the bodies are buried, but I can't help thinking everyone sees them too...

Good luck, and post pictures. If I remember right, this is the first boat you've painted, right? Patience is a virtue, and don't worry- perfection is never attainable!!

One tip I can give is if a bug lands on your paint before it dries, don't try to blow it off All that does is flatten it right into the paint...

Yes, it's the first boat I've painted, other than brush painting my parents house boat with house paint years ago. For some reason, I don't think that really counts.

This is the problem I have with every project I do, either on the house, car or boat. I'm going to try to let it go with my paintjob on the boat, since it's taken me so long to get it in the water.

Blue primer. Really it's not a bad color, but my wife isn't a fan.

2nd coat of white primer on the other side. After sanding, I'll slap on a coat of the blue primer

If you didn't believe me about the color matching the masking tape.

Darker blue is the color the boat is going to be.

I ended up making the stripe between the 2 existing stripes so it's a little wider. I would have gone with the thinner stripe, but it seemed a little too low. I'm planning on getting some pinstriping tape to accent it a little. Probably red to stick with my color scheme.

it is so tempting to paint my boat while i have everything off of it. but talked myself out of it. the gelocat not destroyed by my repairs is in good shape, especially the hull.
Can't wait to see you final product

While the rub rail is off-

Do you have any leaking in the interior? I rebedded my windows, but still had a leak on the port side. The rubrail had been replaced several times, and the holes were not filled. I see where yours are. I removed the screws and recaulked the joint, then filled the holes before reistalling the rubrail. Not sure where the problem was, but it's gone now.

I see what you mean about the color- doubt you could get that if you tried! I think it's gonna look great with the dark blue. I think dark boats look more elegant. Of course, as Ross says, they don't go faster, but man, they look faster!!

Good Luck, and no pressure, but we're all watching now....

The bottom picture is an old one before I fixed up the hull joint. I've already filled all the holes with epoxy, used my dremel multimax to cut the excess off, and filled the joint with roof type polyurethane white caulk. I slapped a coat of paint on this weekend with poor results. I tested the paint inside the garage on a piece of glass and it settled out perfectly, went out and painted it on a hull that was too hot and it looked like I painted it with one swipe of a brush. That's what I get for getting too anxious to put paint on. The weather ended up being perfect a couple hours later. So, now I have to sand the paint pretty aggressively. I do have to say the paint feels great! And from 10 feet away looks awesome. The topcoat paint is definitely a different animal from the primer so don't think that if you did a good job with the primer that you can use the same technique on the topcoat!

48- and others- while you're stripped down, add an anchor roller: I had a 222 and got a piece of channel iron, c-shaped, maybe 3 x 3 x 14(?), drilled it to bolt inbetween the forestay mount and deck. On then front end I cut out the center side and drilled for a rubber roller.

Ron is right, on the anchor roller Brad. You could mount it kitty cornered in the same way that I mounted mine on my 222. I love mine. It's so fast and easy to to use.

Did you finish painting? I am looking to paint a dark blue on my topside and am interested in seeing how yours came out. TIM

I've had to take a couple weeks off due to weather, work and life in general. If the weather cooperates this weekend, I hope to put another coat or 2 on. The first coat I was happy with went on a couple weeks ago. You could still make out slight brush strokes (not enough thinner, overthinned it the last time so I was a little hesitant) I think I've learned just how much thinner I need now. Even with the flaws, it looked awesome from 10 feet away. The dark blue really looks sharp, especially with the white and red. It's not overly dark like flag blue

Can't wait. We are going to paint ours about the same. Dark blue with burgundy at the top and a small off white stripe separating them. I looked at my boat this week and it really needs some work.

Hi, I am new here and I am almost ready to start the same project. Can you point me in the right direction for "Hull prep" education? Thanks.

Phoebe, sorry I hadn't responded. Between the rain, heat, and humidity (and bugs) my weekends haven't worked out for painting. It is August and I do live in Charleston, SC. The first coat has been sanded flat. I sanded through in a couple spots, but shouldn't have that problem on the next coat.

Ben, I am going by Don Casey's books. "Sailboat Refinishing" is probably your best bet. "Good Old Boat" is another book that covers most things related to fixing your boat. This forum also has quite a bit of info on prepping, just takes a little bit of searching.
