Bought mine from Catalina Direct. Probably cheaper places out there.

My boat is a 1988 and according to CD the paint should have changed in 86 but mine is bronze. Apparently, the pigment in it pure gold because they want $37 for a can of spray paint. Is there anything special about the paint that makes it worth that much?

It's always been too expensive, Hayden. GM used to make a Camel color, don't know if it's available anymore.

I will also be having the heat exchanger boiled out and it will come back bare copper. The last time I did it, I used engine paint but it started to flake off almost immediately. Any suggestions on how to get paint to stick?

Try your local auto paint supply dealer. I was able to get a perfect match for my Volvo (green) from my local paint dealer. Just like at Home Depot they add pigment and shake. It was probably 15 years ago but I got a pint or quart for under $20.

The GM camel color was a perfect match but I can't find it anywhere now. People suggested using Rustoleum's "aged copper" available at Home Depot - I tried it, it's close but not a good match so I broke down and bought the Universal bronse paint from Catalna Direct. Seems like good paint but shouldn't be 5 times the price.
Regarding paint flaking: I haven't had any problems with paint flaking off - make sure the surface is clean, I use denatured alcohol as a final wipe to remove any oils. When I repainted my heat exchanger, I stripped it and used primer. When touching up the engine, I don't use primer.

Check out Ace Hardware! There is nothing special about engine paint in our application. The temps just don’t get that high. Ace has a red spray that is a perfect match for Beta. And probably the other red engines..

The problem is with the universal and their bronze which is not very common.

I searched around for a while looking for an exact match. I picked up rustoleum "pure gold" recently, its pretty close but not an exact match, its the best i can find. its either that or pay up for the OEM can.

So if you buy Rustolium you get "pure gold" for normal paint price but if you buy Universal Bronze it costs as much as pure gold!:banghead:
