I RECENTLY HAD MY H34 'S BOTTOM PAINTED . sINCE THEN I REALIZE THAT MY DATAMARINE DEPTH SOUNDER IS GOING CRAZY IT WILL GIVE ME A CORRECT INFO FOR A NANOSECOND AND THEN WILL PROVIDE NUMBERS LIKE 1.8 - 3.2 AND MOST OF THE TIME 8.8 OR 9.6 AND SO ON FOR A PERIOD OF 2 TO 3 MINUTES .THESE NUMBERS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH FISHES ! THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY SPECIALLY AT NIGHT GOING BACK IN THE CHANNEL AT LOW TIDE (+/- 6 FEET IN CENTER PART ) I CHANGED MY BATTERIES BUT THIS DOES NOT IMPROVE ANYTHING . THE WIRING ( 30 FEET CABLE) SEEMS GOOD MEANING THAT IF I SHAKE IT IT DOES NOT AFFECT THE READINGS ! COULD THIS BE RELATED TO PAINTING ?? HOW CAN I CORRECT THE PROBLEM CAN I CHANGE THE SOUNDER WITHOUT HAULING ??

depth tranducer

Yes and Yes are the answer to your guestions, The bottom paint could have affected the tranducer and you can change it in the water (you will get wet but not bad) tranducers should be painted with special tranducer paint not bottom paint,it could have been damaged when being hauled or launched if the slings were under it. Hope this helps and you might want to check in the manual under faults and what to check but it sounds to me like you need a tranducer.

check the display

Send the display head back to the manufacturer for calibration. At lease they can verify that the problem is not with the head (I had the same problem and the display gain was way off spec). The problem with standard bottom paint is that the solvent in the paint attacks the transducer. The special bottom paint that pete mentioned is water based and does not attack the transducer.
