Have you tightened the packing nut?

Capt. Jon: Have you tightened the packing nut? It sould not leak when the shaft is NOT turning. When you are in gear there should be a drip at a rate of 3-5 drips per minute. If you cannot tighten it up any more then you will probably need a repack. You can get the packing info off the Hunter Marine site. It is in the FAQ section. I would suggest that you get the teflon stuff if you want just a packing material. If you want to go HOG wild, consider a PYI dripless packing system ($200 but you will not need to worry about it again for a long time).

Hi Jon, there are several articles on the subject

in the archives. It depends on whether you have the bronze or plastic box. How much is it leaking? If it is more than a drop per second while the prop shaft is turning then you first need to tighten the box nut about one eigth of a turn. Normally it should not drip when the shaft is not spinning and about a drop every few seconds while it is spinning. The bronze boxes have a jam nut that needs to be loosened in order to tighten the box. If the packing is more than a few years old I would replace it the next time you haul the boat. Easier to do on the hard than in the water. As long as the flax material has not hardened you should be able to compress it some in order to get the right drip rate. Terry

Just have it done.

Capt. Jon: Just have the yard redo it for you. If you can be there when they do it, all the better. It may have been marginal in the fall and just needs to be replaced. You should figure 1 hr of labor and the packing materials.

Can some one show me a photo of this box?

Can some one show me a photo of this box or explain where it is? I would guess you are talking about the shaft to the propelor. So, this box must be on the inside of the hull on the saft just before I exits the boat??? I don't remember seeing a box on my shaft. I remeber a rubber ordeal that wraps around the shaft. I will take a look at it tomorrow morning. Skipper (Eric Stanson) From Ohio
