Packing Gland

I have to tighten my packing on my Catalina 30, however I cannot lossen up the locking nut. I tried penetrating oil and some good force, but no movement other than the entire shaft starting to move. I currently drip 1 drop every two seconds at rest and a healthy spray under power. Can I wait until I haul out in the Fall, or should I contact a mechanic (if I can find one) right now. The bilge pump has no problem keeping up, I have actually never heard it come on while on board, although others at the marina have told me it does come on once in a while.

Stuffing Box

Warren Try this link. Also use the archive search for packing gland, or more freqently known as stuffing box. Lots of recent discussions. I wouldn't wait, but with patience, you should be able to get the two nuts apart by yourself. Why spend $X per hour, when you can do the same thing, with the right tools, yourself, and grab a few cold ones while you're waiting? Stu

Hammer

Try tapping the locking nut in the correct direction with a hammer.
