so my 10 year old 310 shaft seal has an excessive drip rate that I can no longer slow by tightening the packing gland nut. I guess I need to repack the seal. Should I just use the original material, or try a dripless material, or maybe a PSS coupling?

Repacking with a gore type material will cost about $10. Converting to a PSS drippless system will cost $750-1,000. Both costs are you doing all the labor. So the question is how much do you want to spend?

Thanks for reply JK
easy choice for me ($10).
When I bought the boat (10 tears ago) salesperson recommended against the dripless material ("gore type"?). wonder why? it seems a no brainer.. no drip seems better than drip.

Have read MaineSail's how to article? He has a good discussion of the dripless packing.
