1984 hunter 31. 1" shaft. Does anyone know the size of the packing material. I found some on the boat from previous owner( 1/4" packing). It seems big to me.
I don't think the shaft diameter determines the packing size. Last year my yard replaced the cutlass bearing and a leaking shaft log and in the process damaged the stuffing box. The new stuffing box they installed takes 1/4" packing whereas the old one took 3/16".
Noel: This was the size published by Hunter Marine. I have repacked my last two Hunters with 3/16" packing. It may be different on other makes or non-OEM boxes.
