I have been looking at my packing gland while doing work at the rear of my engine and noticed it does not look like what I expected. I have found a large rubber sleeve marked Volvo Penta secured by 2 clamps over the shaft. Is my packing nut inside?? Should I mess with it. I purchased my boat out of the water and has been on the hard for the past 14 months. Can I wait till I get back on the water and check it or am I better off just rebuilding it now and adjusting it later. Also, I understand this shaft seal should drip some while shaft is rotating to keep the bearing area cool. Can it do that with that rubber sleeve on??
Thanks

Thanks Lee
I should have done my research first before posting for help. Lot's of stuff out there on the volvo box. I have learned that you must grease it regularly and the burp it after launch.
Thanks

Yes you must grease the Volvo seals and I have found it best to use the grease Volvo recommends. You pinch the seal and inject it with a syringe being careful not to disturb the o-rings in the process. I usually pinch/inject at 10:00, 2:00, 4:00 & 8:00 to assure that the grease is evenly distributed.

They are pretty rare but you do occasionally see them. Much more popular in Europe.
