i have a 2004 Hunter 466; is there any easy way to get to the packing gland to service? and while i am at it, is there a way to drain oil other than thru the dip stick

You're pretty well stuck with going through the dip stick ................. also prevents draining the oil into your bilge and from there to the ocean.
For servicing the gland, if you can post a few pictures, I KNOW one of our resident genii will come up with a best solution. I've seen a few glands here that were near impossible to service and yet ingenuity overcame.

So recently i posted a question re water i was getting the well below the engine. The consensus was: the water pump seal. WELL close but wrong. It turned out a hose clamp for the hose going to the pump had broken and water was leaking from the hose. The scary part is that had that hose blown off while under power i open water i would have been pumping lots and lots of water into the boat. So an hour of labor later (not counting the need to basically dismantle the galley cabinet to access the panel, it was all fixed and I'm dry again. !!!
Hose clamps should NEVER break, ever. If you check the broken clamp, you'll probably see corrosion on the screw or elsewhere. All hose clamps in your boat MUST be high quality SS to avoid such failures. Additionally, any clamped hose which can sink your boat also MUST be double clamped.
I know that's a lot of musts, but you've seen possible outcome.
