Just replaced packing gland on a Catalina 270 but seemed like it could have used 4 layers of packing...owners manual calls for 3. Old packing gland was in tough shape. It's a 1994 with a Perkins 18 horse diesel. Any harm in adding a fourth or leave well enough alone? In gear it's dripping about 30 to 45 per minute. I used "teftek" synthetig packing. PS: Best all around boat we've ever owned. Javaken@aol.com

I hand tighten mine to get 5-6 drips per minute

with the engine not running, should maybe triple or 4X as much when running but 35 to 45 seems a little excessive.

Try the PSS seal

If you're already having to redo your packing gland, you really should consider the PSS packless seal system. Mine is totally dry whether the shaft is turning or not. I occasionally "burp" the seal to let a little water through and just to make sure there's a good water layer between the carbon-carbon seals. It came as standard on my C400 MKII (2000) and it's a great seal. I should also say a good company--once when I pulled the shaft and lost the retaining screws they sent replacement screws and seals free of charge. It makes for a dry bilge anyway.

Maybe excessive

Loosen your set nut & tighten your packing gland nut 1/8 turn or so. it seems you are dripping a bit much. Remember to feel the gland after running for a bit to see if it gets hot. If so, you'll need to back off the packing gland nut a bit. Somewhere in there there is a sweet spot with little
o water and the shaft & gland staying cool. It may take several adjustments...
