Can packing material for the stuffing box be changed with the boat in water?

yes it can, its a little messy but not bad, the main thing is to make sure you have both layers of material out of the old box (sometimes the second layer is tricky to remove) i push on the side of the box as i slide it along the shaft, this pulls the inner layer and the washer out of the box. the faster you work the less water comes in so have everything ready, pre cut your material.

Dear Jim:I have been told that you can replace packing with the boat in the water. It does and can cause water to obviously enter the boat when the packing nut and packing is removed. I would suggest that you stuff the stern tube with a cloth from outside the boat as to minimize the water flow. We have done this in the past when a shaft seal needed to be installed in the water.
