If your weren't there, you missed it.
Brian and Diana stopped by Friday Harbor and we all got together with
Mitzi and Bear at the Ale House on Saturday. Brian told us that Jim
and Gloria were launching in Anacortes. Laura had to work on Sunday
so we couldn't depart until Monday (Besides, Mitzi had promised us a
dinner of lamb curry). I took the awnings down, shipped the boom,
bent on the sails, rigged the jacklines and generally prepared for sea
while Laura was at work. On Monday we departed at low slack water at
noon so we could take advantage of the current flowing North to Bedwell.
We had enough wind to sail for a few hours and checked through
Canadian customs at Poet's Cove where we spent the night(And had
left-over lamb curry for supper). Tuesday we again took advantage of
the North flowing current to make our way through Sansum Narrows
between Saltspring and Vancouver Islands to Maple bay where we were
directed into our reserved slip next to Austin and Krista McHugh and
family in "Katia Sofia".
Brian and Diana were there to greet us and Jim and Gloria Elder
arrived shortly in "Wren" and tied up next to the Albin 25 "Swedie".
I'm not certain of the order of arrival but Max and Lisa Baer's
"Siliqua" tied up on our port side, Peter and Ulla Jacobs in "Sin
Tascha" and Jonathan (Who's last name I didn't get) and friend Becky
in their "New" Vega #2221 "Noname" were all tied up in a row by the
time we got settled. Kevin in "Nossa" ex "Lyra" V1039, formerly owned
by Brian Hofler was at anchor in the bay and our old young friend Matt
Elder arrived late and dropped the hook in "Skull" in time to join us
for the party. A couple in an Albin 27 whose name I didn't get also
joined in the fun.
Also present minus their boats were Craig Hurt and his First Mate
(Whose name I don't have) and two young men who recently sailed their
Vega to Hawaii and back.
Tuesday night we had a no-host gathering at the Maple Bay Marina pub.
We spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday visiting, making new friends,
renewing old friendships, comparing boats and sharing ideas.
Wednesday it rained most of the day but Brian and Peter weren't
deterred from sailing their dingys. Wednesday night we held the
traditional pot-luck supper in the marinas covered pavilion.
I may have missed someone. I'm not certain but we will be getting an
accurate list and a more detailed account, complete with photos and
possibly even video on the AVA website in the next few days.
Thursday we departed Maple Bay for Poet's Cove where our bosun, Bree,
had a minor adventure that caused us to miss the tide and take an
extra day getting back to Friday Harbor; but that's another story.
