I bought a 1985 Pearson 303 a month ago. It had been sitting on the ground for 5 years, and I put it in the water on July 3. I need some pointers on how to properly set up the propane system, which should be pretty simple (tank in cockpit, 2-burner stove in galley) but I don't want to take any chances. There is nothing in the Pearson manual that covers the really elementary stuff. I know I need to take the tank out and get it refilled. I need some advice on that, and then how to hook it back up and test it so I don't blow myself up. Any advice would be most appreciated.

First you should have a gauge on the high
pressure side of the regulator.. Next the system is connected basically the same as you gas grill. Physically inspect the entire pipe line for deteriorated hose , kinked tubing, loose fittings. If there is still gas in the tank it is still good but will take some time to purge the lines. After you have made a physical inspection and are satisfied that everything "looks" good, turn on the gas and close the valve and watch the gauge for several minutes it should hold steady. If that passes then you may reopen the gas valve and light a burner. Don't be dismayed if it takes some time before you get a flame. The gas in the lines seems to go bad on my system when it sits over the winter. I =n the spring it might take five minutes for me to get a flame. After that it is prompt.
