Like Victor I have owned my P26 for less than 6 months (1971, Hull#229)and am still learning about the boat. I can not find a handle to fit in the socket under the goose neck that I think controls the roller reefing. Can you confirm this is how to reef the main? Anyone know where I could get a new handle or what else I might get to operate the reefing. Also wOuld love to hear any comments about the reefing. Here is Boston, the fall winds can kick up a bit and I would like to be able to reef the main. I tried sailing it once on the 135 Genoa alone and once on the main alone and as might be expected neither was great. I would prefer to reef then put up the working jib whne it gets over 20 knots. I tried to post this earlier today but it never showed up. I hope this isn't a duplicate. Thanks for your help.

Are you sure ... :)

Are you sure you really want one? 70's style roller reefing didn't last long. The reefed shape of the main is usually very poor (no way to keep the foot tensioned) and retaining the roller reefing feature of the boom makes adding a boom vang next to impossible. Does the reefing gear in the boom still work? If you really want a handle, you'll have to search. Try a sailors consignment shop and local yacht club swap meets. Your local rig shops might have one, but they will make you pay dearly for it. Having one made is another option. A stainless steel fabrication shop can fix you up ... for a price. Good Luck in your quest!

Jiify reefing

Hi Bob, Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have jiffy reefing system on yours? I noticed somewhere else you mentioned you have a full batten main so this is probaly fairly new and thus I would assunme has reef points built in. SO did you add a jiffy reefing system to your boat, or did come come this way when you bought it? Have you used any other system on this boat? It works well for you? Also while I am asking questions- do you have a jib furling sytem that you are happy with? Having sailed theboat for 2 months I feel that I still have alot to learn about the boat although it is fairly fast and very stable so it is perfect so far. Mike

Roller handle

I have such a handle, but I've never used it, because for one thing, the jiffy reefing method I can use because my main has two sets of reef points works well, and for another thing, even when I've experimented with the handle, the boom doesn't rotate to wrap the main. I'm not sure why, but assume that the former owner never used that method either, since the boat came with lots of reefing bungies. The handle has a cylindrical end slots that engage with two posts inside the gooseneck, if my memory is correct. You could actually make one if you checked the dimensions carefully. JP
