I guess I'm part of the 35% who navigate from the nav station, which by the way is where we installed the chart plotter. It is an inviolable rule aboard "Buoyant" that charts don't go outside where they'll be subjected to wind and spray. We log hourly fixes when offshore, even in familiar waters, and always have a course to steer set on the gps, even when steering by hand. This course is relayed through the seatalk network to our radar, which is mounted on the binnacle. The one navigation reference we allow outside is the harbor book, used when making landings in strange ports. Otherwise, charts stay on the chart table unless they are stowed in the chart drawer.
