Do you use the owner's manual that came with your boat? For that matter, do you even have one? If so, do you refer to it frequently, is it a valuable part of your reference library? Or is it a document you rarely use? Are the diagrams and schematics useful, and are there other features that also have value? Tell us about your book here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

Owners manual

Use owners manual quite a bit even tho info sometimes is not exactly as installed on my Cat 27 SR. Much better is forum archives, thanks to all those who reply to our questions!!

Small but useful.

When I bought my 1979 H37C from it's third owner I received two boxes of "stuff". That Owner's Manual is more of a booklet, about 5"x8" and only twevle or so pages. But it has winterizing tips, rig tuning, spec sheet, and accurate electrical diagram. It takes up very little space in my 3-inch 3-ring binder. I, too, rely on the expertise here. And I have received full-size diagrams for plumbing and electrical from Hunter. I also refer to the link below.

I have found our manual to be pretty good at helping you get started on finding or fixing a problem. If you are looking for in depth information, it is pretty light. Like most of us, this forum is the best. I have also had great luck with dock buddies, and calling Catalina.

Only the tuning instruction

Have a 1986 28.5 and that was the only section of value.

Bare Bones is about it

I have the orig. owners manual for my 1978 H 27. It has a few tips and the details for the rigging however, as the boat ages and things need to be fixed or replaced it is of very marginal value. The things that I need are the suppliers of the fittings ect. Hunter has been a little help but more often than not they say "we have no information on ...." This is especially true with issues of fiberglass structure i.e. what's under the gelcoat .

Owener's Manual. Yeah, Right!

My boat came with one. It's not all that usefull. So much has been improved since the boat was built 20 years ago not much is acplicable.

Upgradeable

I have a 99 H380, which came with a very useful owners manual plus all the vendor data for the equipment installed in the boat. The 3-ring binder format is also useful to add data from after market sources to my file.

No detail

The 94 270 I just bought came with the owners manual, but it seems to be just a jumping off point.. lots of information, but not enough details.

somewhat of a joke

I do most all work myself on my Yanmar 2GM - very hard to make the bridges between what is said in the manual and what they meant to say. So, read it once, read it twice, put it down, go to work and reason it out for myself. Then, pick it up, look at the numbers and try to make the best call I can.. to a Yanmar dealer to ask... "What do you suppose they meant to say about that"... then its clear as a bell.. the dealer can answer the question in a few seconds compared to hours of trying to figuire it out. Oh, make notes on what you are told, by this time next year... you'll go through it all again. Happy sailing.

Rarely...many of the boat's systems have been...

modified by previous owners, and most of what breaks is related to those modifications! Still it is useful at times, especially as a reference for the length of running rigging lines, etc...

wish I could find one for 71 Venture 2-22

Does anyone know where I can find a complete owners manual including all fixtures, sails info and elect wiring?

read it....it works

I own a 2001 H340 and have done a fair amount of after-market on it. Added air conditioning, cockpit speakers, TV, GPS, replaced water heater, and in every instance consulting the owner's manual has made these tasks easier. I also had the opportunity to tour the factory and watch a 340 being built and the manual accurately portrays systems, electrical, etc. The manual is comprhensive and complete. My feeling is that the manual, similar to cars and other complex items, is meant to be studied many times over. Some items won't make sense initially. But as you gain experience with the equipment, you go back and re-read the manual and things start falling into place. You'll get as much (or as little`) out of the owner's manual as you choose to put into understanding it.

Diagram of centreboard top rope pulley in book

I have a 1994 Hunter 19 waterballast. It has been impossible for me to pull up centreboard ever since I put boat in this year. I pulled in the only line I saw on top, and also tried to pull up on line below deck by hand and wrapping line around screwdriver. There was no drawing in manual whatsoever. Finally, my son came out and fixed the problem. Someone had jery-rigged so that instead of a dual hand-line pulley to pull, there was only one line. What I don't understand is why was the rudder stuck in the sand several times this year in the down position, but I never noticed the centreboard holding the boat back from moving? Does the centreboard give way somewhat when you are in shallow water, or is the rudder deeper than the centreboard?

Need a manual

Hi all: I'm not new to sailing, but I am new to Catalina 22's and just recently purchased one used. Mine is a 1974 swing keel and unfortunately the previous woner did not have a owners manual. How do I get one? Please give me some links to retailors or publishers that I can access. Thanks...
