Soon to launch my Cat 27 for my first season. Even sooner is the annual warehouse sale at my local marine outfitter. I was wondering what essentials are commonly overlooked by novices, like myself, that I should have onboard sooner rather than later (i.e. wood plugs, impeller). Thanks.

Fresh Telltales

Grab a package of the stick on telltales - under $10 and when you are bending your sails on for the season is a great time to replace worn or missing ones, or add new ones. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Everyone...

... overlooks something. Without knowing how your boatis equipped, however, all I can offer is ensure you have the basics: all the USCG mandatory and recommended safety equipment (PFDs, lights, day/night signalling devices, throwable flotation device),a first aid kit, tool kit, basic engine spares, charts for your local waters, etc. Beyond that, think about what could happen or go wrong while sailing and that will give you a better insight into what you should have aboard at all times. This is a mental game that most sailors engage in frequently and so the equipment list is not static.

Extra line...

Bring some extra line along. Especially some small stuff (like a spool of that 3/16ths or 1/4" stuff)... Just in case. Also all that other stuff!

This is a solution....

Always have a check list. That way, you'll never forget something. Preparing a check list is an ongoing thing...you'll discover things needed, and some that were not important. Happy "safe" Sailing....

Get an assortment of

small cloth bags with draw strings. they keep all of those little bits and pieces together. also some zipper plastic bags. A dark colored wet wash cloth in a zipper bag in the sun will get nicely warm and is delightful for refreshing your face. Some hand tools, at the very least, pliers, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, a hammer. A little bit of stainlell steel seizing wire won't take up much room, some cotter pins.

It's true...

No one ever said, "This boat has too many flashlights!"
