Hello, I own a 28 ft O'day. It is the 1979 model. Last year my 12 volt light in the saloon worked. This year not so much. I tried a volt meter and got a reading around 11 or 12 volts. Next I cleaned up the connections and hooked the light back up. Being that it is 12 volts there are two wires one black and one white. Okay here is another wire going to my chain plate. I think but do not know why so I did not reattach it. This light was not working..when it is altogether and I put the meter to it I get no reading? I tried to pull the wires to put a messenger on them and they do not budge. Because of the construction, are they in a track between the core? They do not budge?? . Yes I have hooked the lamp up to a 12 volt battery direct and it lights.

You should reconnect the wire you took off of chain plate as its likely and ground (bonding) wire for system or lightning to ensure all metal parts are at same potential, as far as the light goes, it should work if you have voltage there however i think you mentioned that when you put it all back together it wont light. there must be something loose if you have 12v prior to puting parts back. could be the wire itself buried above ceiling has an open in it that just intermittenly works by chance when wiggled etc....but is open when all is fastened down again. a real pain in the *** since you cant pull a replacement wire.
Hey Mick, forgot to mention that my Oday 28 is a 79' as well. my cabin light on the port side was abandoned years ago with same trouble with the hidden wire, had to reroute new wires and chose a new light location so as to be able to hide them. Ended up putting the fixture high on aft part of port settee, works well for a reading lamp or port cabin lamp.
Thats exactly what I thought. The wires that are there are not moving. Thanks for your reply
