I've been there
Hi,I own HR38/137 and rebuilt my MD21B winter 2003. The first thing to remember this is an old engine so some parts are getting difficult to obtain. The engine was originally fitted to the old Peaugot 504, this means you can use Peaugot parts in place of the very expensive Volvo sourced parts. Having said that some Volvo parts, possibly gaskets, are better quality than the Peaugot equivalents. Before you decide to rebuild the main question I would ask is has the cooing water had anitfreeze added. If it has good, if not you may have problems.I would assume you will remove the engine and strip it. You can then assess it's condition. You will need to replace the following parts. Pistons and liners, Crankshaft bearings, oil pump, all seals and gaskets. You may need to replace the cylider head (it is made of aluminium so it can act as a sacraficial anode for the rest of the engine). I had to replace my cam followers, not cheap. All of these are Peaugot parts.I had to go to Mr Volvo for a drive plate and exhaust elbow which had become pourous plus various very expensive gaskets.I found removing the old cylider liners the most difficult job, I needed to make up a puller. When you have finished use the cheapest oil you can find otherwise the engine will never run in properly and the cylider bores will glaze. The whole job coat me less than £2000, including a new cylinder head.If you have any further questions email me - to_prn@yahoo.co.uk
