Really want to buy a Hunter 26, but have concerns. Might be traveling in IA, MO, KS, OK and Texas. Does anyone have any experience traveling without special permits? How often do you get stopped, if at all? How much is the fine?

Trailer Sailer

Dick, I picked up a new 260 last August and trailered her (6 hours, noon until 6PM) to my marina in NJ. Never once got stopped. It was fairly tight going through some toll booths. The next day I left the marina to take her to the ramp, less than a mile away.Got stopped for inspection by local police. I didn't have any permits, they would have cost approx $300 for interstate travel with load exceeding 8'6". Good luck!

over width

I owned and operated a small fleet of trucks for ten years, operated in 48 states and Canada, I have never ever once seen or heard of a trailerable boat being ticketed for over width, it is not in the mind set of the policing authorities to generally consider a boat on a trailer being towed by your pick up truck or suv, this is not to say it can not happen or that it wont, just giving you what my experience was , it is not hard to get permits if you so desire call any truck stop ask if they have permit service/ most of these folks are reasonalby knowlegeable re permits, , good luck Mike Bacome

insurance

Not sure what it is like in the US but down here an annual permit is required, flashing amber light overwidth signs front and back. Max speed of 80kph Have an accident without any of these requirements would result in "no insurance cover" in Australia.

accident the biggest problem

I think the most serious problem that might happen is if you have an accident. You might be liable and no insurance coverage because of the violation. Recommend checking with your insurance company.

Dick, Mike Bacome is right on about towing

boats on the interstate hiways. If your tow rig and boat are a clean operation and you don't try to pull a H26 with a Toyota mini 4x4 you shouldn't have a problem. We have pulled our 95 H26 on a Hunter trailer over 3500 miles, through the NW, so far without any law problems. I also pulled the boat and trailer to the Washington State Patrol station for inspection and all we talked about was how the boat sailed. If you try towing in busy city conditions or your rig will cause traffic problems then you should have permits. Ray S/V Speedy
