shopping for a new outboard for my catalina 25. old one damaged in hurricane was a 9.9 four stroke evenrude (1995). It was/is, a heavy sucker, and it was hard lowering & especially raising it & tilting it manually! my wife as 1st mate, could not manage it if I was incapacitated in some way, or overboard!~ so I've been looking for a lighter motor and one with ELECTRIC tilt. Any suggestions you sailors out there? oh, by the way, my max hull speed could not be more than 6 knots. so would an 8hp work just a well? Thagg

I'd look at gross weight of the boat rather than its hull speed in determining the right size outboard. I ran a 1988 Johnson 9.9 two-stroke on a C-22 weighing in around 3,000 pounds. A four-stroke engine is more efficient and I have been told you can go with less horsepower for the same results. I don't think I'd go lower than 9.9HP for a 25-foot boat. The electric tilt option is the way to go for the issues you raise.
