Outside odor after flushing

Peggy: We have used KO in our holding tank since the purchase of our boat last year (new). Heads are Vacu-flush and use fresh water only. When sitting in the cockpit, we occasionally smell odors after the forward head is flushed. We suspect there is not enough air getting thru the vent for the KO to do its job. We've ordered your book, but need help while we wait for it to arrive. Thanks.

Try switching to Odorlos in that tank

It uses the same aerobic principals to prevent odor that K.O. uses, but instead of relying solely on enough oxygen from an external source, the active ingredient is nitrates, which promote oxygen release from the waste itself. It often works in tanks that don't get enough oxygen through the vent to allow K.O. to work aerobically. Otoh, how long--if ever--has it been since you've thoroughly rinsed out the tank? It should be done about once a month.
