I am considering moving from my traditional stuffing box to a PSS unit. Since the PSS unit does not provide as much support to the prop shaft, will I be placing more force on my transmissions output shaft bearing? Is this a concern? Jeff Jones S/V Escapade

PSS

Jeff, I installed a PSS last spring and love it. I don't think you have a valid concern about the support. If the stuffing was indeed supporting the shaft, then I think you would have been getting unwanted wear on the shaft. I would say, go for it. Tom

Not enough support

Dear Jeff, Your stuffing box when set up correctly should provide little to no support to the shaft. I do know that some support does take place not so much for the thrust bearing but for the shaft whip. It could be found that if you replace the box you may even see and hear less noise. Hope this helps. Kevin L. Woody
