OUTHAUL ACCESS

Has anyone removed the outhaul from the boom, or removed the sheaves near the gooseneck? I need to replace the aft section of line and a chiped sheave in the front. I removed the end cap and tried pulling it out from the back end of the boom, but it seems to be connect to an internal devise that is attached somewhere inside the boom. I also see that the line in the front, that comes out the bottom of the boom, is not the same line that comes out the back. I'm thinking that the rivets near the front are holding something in place that creates some purchase advantage. Before I drill them out, and try to pull it forward, I thought I'd ask.

I have not though there is a diagram of the mechanism in the Selden manual, I recall. You should be able to find the PDF online.

I have the manual that came with the boat. It does have a schematic of the internal boom (outhaul and reefing), but doesn't help with removal.

Make sure you at least give Catalina Yachts factory's customer service an opportunity to advise. Back in the day they were quite helpful with me when I acquired a 20 year old C27. I realize times have changed, Frank Butler passed, their wonderful service manager left ... but you still might get some help..email or telephone. Another thought is to contact a dealer who may still believe in farming new customers my answering a call for help.
Also, here's a thread from a few years back I found about the subject.
Make sure you go to the end. You should be able to clarify a few things by examining the final attachment. Good luck.

I replaced my outhaul lines earlier this year, both the dyneema line and the braided dacron line. Remove the rear boom end cap to access the end of the dynema line, then ease out the outhaul line coming out the boom of the boom. Next using a pair of needle nose pliers, pull out a inch of so of the dacron line loop away from the pin at the front of the boom. Attach a thin messenger line to the dacron line loop pulled away from the pin. Next, remove the set screw that secures the pin. Pull the pin out enough to release the dacron line from it (with the messenger line still attached). Resecure the pin. You will need to remove this pin again later to reinstall the line. Next, pull the dyneema line out of the rear of the boom. The dyneema line will come out, as will the dacron adjustment line, along with the purchase blocks. Make sure that the dacron line is long enough that it does not pull into the boom from the adjustment slot at the bottom of the boom. Replace the dyneema and /or dacron lines as needed. Pull the lines and blocks back into the boom using the messenger line and secured the loop of dacron line to the pin at the front of the boom.

Very helpful - Thank you. I'll give it a try.

What type of screw is holding the pin. I am able to feel an edge inside the hole, and tried a couple of tools (i.e. phillips, slotted, hex, torque), but none of them catch whatever is recessed in the hole.

I figured it out, it's a 1/16" allen nut, which was smaller than I e3xpected. After spending lots of time sorting things out, I was able to change my lines.
