10HP

is what the manual says. Some folks are running more. Not sure what the limiting factors are or how to beef them up. Remember, the bigger, the heavier.

Mechanical limits

The Mac has physical limits as does any boat design. The 10 hp limit is designed to prevent the stern and the hull from being damaged due to too much water pressure. I'm sure one could add a 15 hp with no problem. I just don't think the cost and the very small increase in speed are worth it. I found an 8 hp Tohatsu more than adequate for my 26. Keeping the hull clean is another way of adding speed too. Steve P.

Hull type determines Max speed

Bill, Since the 26C is a displacement hull and not a planing one, it has a maximum hull speed which will not improve much with more power. 5-10hp is good for this boat. If you sail in the ocean, I recommend the Tohatsu 9.9. It has an ultra long shaft, electric start, 4 stroke with hi-output alternator. Very sweet engine for this boat since it is a real pain leaning over into the well to pull a rope starter. Doesn't come out of the water in swells. The alternator charges the battery and runs nav lights, etc.
