I am considering purchasing a 1972 Catalina 27 from a friend. It currently has a 10hp outboard, but lowering and raising it seems to be about the hardest parts of sailing the boat. Plus, I end up with scratches virtually every time I use the thing. It looks like there's room for a small inboard, and the manuals on the C27 site show inboards. Is it worth it to put in an inboard instead...a Yanmar or Atomic 4, I guess...or are there more convenient ways of rigging the outboard? Thanks. Emiliano

Not sure about the transom on the C27
A friend of mine had an H27 with a sugar scoop transom that made it difficult to reach the outboard bracket. He installed a power lift unit so he could do it from the cockpit. I know it's pretty expensive ($1500) but a lot less than a repower. I've included a link to West Marine with their version but I would think there's others (maybe less expensive) out there as well. I'm just not sure if this would work on the transom of the C27. Jim

No, not cost effective to install inboard,
there are probably better brackets to assist with your problem. I've attached a link for manual brackets with a spring assist that are similar to the power ones mentioned by Jim C.

Enclosed transom and power lift
Last year I bought my 75 Catalina 27 and wanted to re-power to a Merc 4 stroke. Well I can save you time, a 4 stroke won't fit into the rectangular cavity provided for a motor. I had the area enclosed with marine plywood and glassed and gel-coated over. The transom looked great. I then added a power bracket; push one button on the Merc controller and the motor comes up; push another and the motor goes down. I too have used the manual brackets; they seem to hang up when you want to get the motor down in a chop; or, snag at the most inconvenient time. So now my new Merc Big Foot 9.9 works great, burns an incredible small amount of fuel, is wonderfully quiet, and is all the power you need.

This is a common question on the older C27's. I'd do an archive search to find exact models that will fit in the well. I have a C27 with the outboard mounted on the transom, and I had the same problem ... a real ________ to raise. I found an old small-boat vang tackle in a forepeak locker. I rigged it upside down between the pushpit rail and the lifting handle on the outboard. Now I just sit comfortably in the cokpit and pull on a 4:1 purchase line. Could you do something like that? The lower end of the tackle to the OB lower Unit
I did this on my C27 with the Johnson 2-stroke 15HP I have in the transom hole. With a hose clamp and SS ring, I shackled the vang tackle to the stern rail above the OB. Then I drilled a small hole thru the vertical fin on the OB's lower unit above the prop, and ran a clevis pin thru the hole to attach the vang's block to the OB with a small shackle. Gives you good leverage to raise the OB, and you can pull it up enough to get the OB completely out of the water.
